Dear Dog Parents,

Summer's here, and while you're planning beach trips and backyard barbecues, there's one 10-minute routine that could be the most important thing you do for your furry family member this month.

Your Monthly Cancer Detection Checklist

The Feel Test (3 minutes) Run your hands systematically over your dog's entire body, feeling for:

  • New lumps or bumps (even tiny ones)
  • Changes in existing lumps (harder, larger, or more mobile)
  • Swollen lymph nodes (check under the jaw, in front of shoulders, behind knees)
  • Unusual firmness in the abdomen

The Look Test (3 minutes) Examine your dog visually for:

  • Changes in skin color or texture
  • Sores that won't heal
  • Unusual discharge from eyes, nose, or ears
  • Asymmetry in facial features or body shape

The Behavior Check (3 minutes) Monitor for subtle changes:

  • Decreased appetite or interest in favorite treats
  • Changes in bathroom habits
  • Reluctance to exercise or play
  • Hiding or seeking more attention than usual

The Mouth Inspection (1 minute) Lift your dog's lips and check for:

  • Bad breath that's gotten worse
  • Red or white patches on gums
  • Loose teeth or unusual growths
  • Difficulty chewing

When to Call Your Vet

Call within 24 hours if you notice:

  • Any new lump larger than a pea
  • Rapid changes in existing lumps
  • Persistent limping or lameness
  • Significant changes in appetite or energy

Schedule an appointment within a week for:

  • New small lumps or bumps
  • Gradual behavior changes
  • Changes in bathroom habits
  • Bad breath or mouth issues

This Month's Action Step

Set a monthly reminder on your phone for the same date each month. Make it part of your routine—many pet parents do their monthly check during bath time or grooming sessions.

Remember: You know your dog better than anyone. Trust your instincts, and when in doubt, it's always better to have a vet take a look.

Next week: We'll cover the summer prevention strategies that can help protect your dog year-round.

Talk to you again soon.

Warm hugs and love,

The Drake Dog Cancer Team
